Personal Laughter Benefits
Laughter triggers chemical, neurological and physiological changes. The mind/body connection ensures these changes occur automatically whether you laugh at jokes and humor, which is conditional laughter, or you simply choose to laugh unconditionally because you can. With a broad range of health, social and spiritual benefits, it is useful to think of intentional laughter as a form of exercise and self-care, and to adopt a daily practice of laughing on purpose.
Laughter stimulates the production of “happy hormones” in the brain, including dopamine, which is associated with pleasure and reward; and serotonin, which elevates mood.
Laughter reduces cortisol production, which is the stress hormone; and it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which offsets anxiety and the “fight or flight” response.
Laughter dilates blood vessels, normalizing blood pressure and oxygenating blood and tissues; and it increases lung capacity.
Strengthened immune system
Laughter rapidly exercises your diaphragm, which stimulates the flow and cleansing action of the lymphatic system; it also increases production of T-cells, which kill infected cells.
Increased tolerance for pain
Laughter generates endorphins, the body’s natural pain killer.
Oxytocin is called “the bonding hormone” because it is produced during activities that typically foster closeness, such as breast feeding, hugs, sex and laughter.
Many people think society makes it uncomfortable to laugh on purpose. But once you start, especially in a group, it feels so good that you become less self-conscious and more confident.
Unconditional laughter opens you up to a childlike spirit of playfulness and curiosity, encouraging flexibility in perspective and behavior so you take yourself and circumstances less seriously.
Another result of stimulating endorphin production is increased energy and physical vitality. Many people liken the effects of a hearty laughter session to a “runner’s high.”
You can more easily recall things you were taught while laughing because the dopamine boost increases receptivity to learning.
Intentional laughter, especially in a group, helps you be more tolerant of others and accepting of your own imperfections and mistakes.
Laughing on purpose redirects your attention out of your head/thinking and into your breath and body, helping you be present in the moment and open to accepting things as they are.
Laughter yoga founder Dr. Madan Kataria claims regular laughter makes us more generous.
As with hugs, when we smile and laugh we almost always get back what we give away and then some.
Everyone is born knowing how to laugh and we don’t need words or a common language to laugh together.
